The Foundation only supports charities whose primary focus is health related.
We recognise that charities working internationally may have a variety of programmes. Applicants to our International funding stream should apply for their health-related programme.
Unfortunately, we receive many more applications than we can afford to fund, so please see below our current exclusion criteria.
Even if you have a primary health focus, you are not eligible to apply if your organisation:
- Has an annual income of £20 million or higher.
- Has been registered for less than 5 years with the Charity Commission of England and Wales (or other relevant charity regulator).
- Has fewer than 5 years' audited or independently examined accounts downloadable from its Charity Commission of England and Wales record (or other relevant charity regulator).
If your organisation is one of the following, you are not eligible to apply:
- NHS hospices - i.e. hospices that are
fully funded and run by the NHS.
Through our
Palliative Care programme, we support
independent hospices - typically, these receive some funding from the NHS, but rely on donations, legacies, and trading for the majority of their income to fully fund their services.
- Charities that solely provide complementary, wellbeing, counselling, and other general support for adults with cancer or other life-limiting illnesses.
- Community Centres / Community Groups.
- General counselling organisations (we do support charities that solely provide specialist counselling for specific needs such as child bereavement, parental bereavement, trauma or abuse, and drug and alcohol addiction).
- Schools (including SEN schools).
- Search and rescue organisations.
- Universities and research institutions.
- Hospital charities: Please note that, currently, we are not accepting applications from hospital charities. We are reviewing our strategy on this point, and we hope to have an update in Spring 2025.
- Grantmaking organisations.
If your charity is eligible to apply, the following services or project types are not eligible for support:
- Art and music therapy dedicated programmes are not eligible for support. However, if you use art and / or music therapy as part of your overall therapy provision, you are eligible to apply.
- Capital projects (new build or refurbishments).
- Entertainment activities.
- Funding that directly replaces statutory funding.
- General advice on healthy living and keeping fit.
- General advice for a healthy pregnancy, breastfeeding, etc.
- General mental wellbeing support (please see our
Relief of Sickness page for information about which mental health services we support).
- General parenting advice.
- Homeless charities: while we support charities that provide healthcare services for the homeless, we do not support more general homeless charities that provide housing, sleeping facilities, day centres, and other social care type support.
- Humanitarian relief: The Foundation provides emergency and disasters relief support to The British Red Cross and or the DEC.
- Legal advice relating to health issues or conditions.
- Make-a-wish type activities for individuals with life-limiting conditions (e.g., gifts / holidays / special experiences, etc.).
- Personal care, transport, and shopping services for individuals affected by any condition.
- Respite holidays (although we do support respite care).
- Services to relieve social isolation / loneliness.
- Sports and fitness activities (including accessible sports and fitness programmes for patient groups or people with disabilities, or sport and leisure activities as therapies for mental health). Please note that we do support specialist rehabilitation programmes (including specialist gyms, equipment, hydrotherapy, etc.)
- Support for carers in the UK (though we do support carers organisations working internationally).
- Support for specific professions.
- Therapies not routinely prescribed by the NHS.
- Training for staff to obtain individual accreditations or personal development (e.g., Master’s degrees, leadership courses, etc.), or training for UK medical staff which we consider to be replacement of NHS funding.
- Wellbeing activities (including social and leisure activities and events, etc.).
Other exclusions
- The Foundation wishes to be as inclusive as possible in its grantmaking to ensure that all the projects it funds can benefit anyone, without discrimination of any kind. To this end, The Foundation will not support projects where potential beneficiaries may be excluded on the basis of the
Equality Act protected characteristics (age, disability, gender reassignment, marriage and civil partnership, pregnancy and maternity, race, religion or belief, sex, sexual orientation). Naturally, depending on the applicant organisation's own charitable activities, some projects will focus on particular sections of society. However, The Foundation will not support organisations that are proactively excluding potential beneficiaries on the basis of any of the Equality Act protected characteristics.
- We do not fund any project specifically aligned to any
political party.
- We do not support
core costs
(e.g. overheads such as rent, utilities, salaries of staff not related to delivering charitable activities, etc.).
- We do not provide
retrospective funding.
- We do not accept applications from
individuals.
Current grant holders: read the section below
- If you are a current grant holder, you
may
not be eligible to apply again until your current grant period has come to an end. Please check our
Funding FAQs section to find out more and contact us if you are not sure about your eligibility.
- If you have received a grant from The Foundation for the last three years in a row, we would not award you a new grant for another 12 months after the end of your last grant period. If you are unsure about which application window you should submit a new application in, please contact us at grants@jamestudor.org.uk or on 0117 9596496 and we will be able to advise you.
Our funding exclusions apply to all our funding programmes. If you are not eligible to apply for a grant from The James Tudor Foundation, we have provided some information on
alternative sources of funding which we hope you will find helpful.
