FUNDING FAQs

  • Am I eligible to apply?

Information about checking your eligibility can be found on the How to apply page.

You can find our full list of exclusions on our What we don't fund page.

  • When can I apply?

Our application deadlines are listed here

Please note that, if we have declined an Expression of Interest or a Full Application from your organisation, the first grant round you are eligible to apply for is the corresponding one in the following year. For instance, if you applied for the June 2024 grant round and were declined (either at Expression of Interest or at Full Application stage), the first grant round you can apply for is June 2025.

If you are unsure when your organisation last applied, please contact us

  • Can I apply as a current grant holder?

Yes, you can, but we do not make concurrent grants.

In other words, if you are currently holding a grant, we could only award a new grant at the end of your current grant period.

For instance, if you were awarded a grant in December 2023, and your project is due to last 12 months, you could only receive payment for a new grant in December 2024.

To achieve this timing, you would need to submit your application for the new grant by the mid-September 2024 deadline.

Please check our application deadlines calendar here.

Please also check the answers in the How often can I apply? and When can I apply? sections.

    • If you are currently holding a grant, please check the Can I apply as a current grant holder? section.

    • If you have received a grant from The Foundation for the last three years in a row, we would not award you a new grant for another 12 months after the end of your last grant period. If you are unsure about which application window you should submit a new application in, please email us at grants@jamestudor.org.uk or call us on 0117 9596496 and we will be able to advise you.

Please note that, while we strive to build mutually beneficial relationships with the organisations we fund, ongoing funding is not guaranteed to any applicant.

  • What can I apply for?

You can request a contribution towards the following:

    • An ongoing service (e.g. service delivery staff such as nurses, doctors, therapists, family support workers, helplines, patient support and information provision, etc.).

    • A new initiative, service, or product your charity is developing (e.g. a new training module for healthcare professionals, a new service to support patients, equipment, etc.).

When you submit your Expression of Interest, feel free to mention more than one option you'd like us to consider.

  • What don't you fund?

You can see the full list of funding exclusions here.

  • Can I apply for retrospective funding?

We do not fund work meant as a one-off activity and which has already concluded (e.g., a conference that has already taken place, websites that have already been launched, training courses that have already concluded, etc.).

If in doubt, please contact us at grants@jamestudor.org.uk or on 0117 9596496

  • How much can I apply for?

Our grants range from £1,000 to £50,000, but our typical grant is between £10,000 and £15,000.

We are unlikely to award more than £10,000 to a first-time applicant.

  • Can I apply for a multi-year grant?

Currently, we award multi-year grants only occasionally.

If your service or project could benefit from longer term funding, do let us know in your application. If successful, our Trustees can consider whether to award you a grant for only one year or for longer.

  • What is the application process?

    • Once you have successfully completed our Eligiblity Checker, you will be asked to complete a brief Expression of Interest form (250 words max.). We aim to reply within 10 working days. We may contact you if we need to learn more about your funding request or your organisation.

    • If your organisation and service / project match our funding priorities, we will invite you to submit a Full Application.

    • Applications can only be submitted through our online application portal.

    • We advise you to consult our Guidance for Applicants before completing the online Full Application form. Please get in touch if you need assistance at any point.

    • Once we receive your Full Application, we carry out an initial assessment and may contact you if we need further information.

    • If your application is progressed to a Board meeting, we will communicate the outcome within 48 hours of that Board meeting having taken place.

    • If your application is not progressed to a Board meeting, we will let you know as soon as possible so that you can seek funds elsewhere.

  • If successful, when will we receive the grant?

    • If you are awarded a grant, we will email you a Grant Offer asking you to sign our Terms and Conditions of funding and to send us your organisation’s bank details. We pay all grants upfront except grants awarded towards new staff roles.  Please note that multi-year grants are paid  in annual instalments.

    • Staff grants: if your grant is for the employment of new staff, we will release the funds once you have confirmed to us that you have made an offer of employment and that this has been accepted.

  • What are your Terms and Conditions of funding?

    • Here are our Terms and Conditions for our International programme.

    • Here are our Terms and Conditions for all our other programmes.

  • How will I need to report on the grant?

You will need to report to us throughout the life of your grant.

We aim to keep our reporting requirements as light touch as possible, but we do need to receive some information from you so that we can meet our due diligence requirements.

You can read more about our reporting requirements here.

If you have any queries after reading the Guidance for Applicants, please contact us at grants@jamestudor.org.uk or by telephone on 0117 959 6496.
